A tacking duel describes a tactical battle between two boats sailing upwind, where the lead boat tacks every time the trailing boat does to stay directly between them and the wind. This ‘covering’ maneuver ensures the trailing boat stays in ‘dirty air’ (turbulent wind) and cannot pass. One clear example involves two America’s Cup yachts performing twenty tacks in quick succession as the second-place boat tries to break free from the leader’s shadow. It is a physically exhausting test of crew work and steering precision. The goal for the trailer is to force a mistake, while the leader’s goal is to maintain the status quo until the next mark. It is one of the most exciting spectacles in match racing.
