Tani-Otoshi is a valley drop throw performed as a counter or attack. The attacker slides a leg behind both heels of the defender. A backward drop onto the side pulls the opponent to the mat. This motion trips the defender while the attacker falls away safely. One game example involves a player scoring after blocking a hip throw. This technique requires the attacker to time the slide with the step. Success depends on the weight of the attacker pulling the defender down. The opponent falls backward and lands on their back on the floor. Strategy involves waiting for the defender to commit their weight to a turn. This move is a very effective way to score from behind.
