A target man refers to a physically dominant player used to break the defensive line. This player is usually a heavy forward or a powerful center with great size. The team passes the ball to them specifically so they can run directly into the opposition. Their job is to draw in multiple defenders and gain hard yards through sheer force. This creates space for the faster, smaller teammates to exploit on the next play. For example, a team might use a massive number eight as their target man near a ruck. He crashes into the defense to move the ball forward and set a strong platform. This role requires immense physical courage and the ability to hold the ball under heavy contact. Without a reliable target man, an offense can feel soft and easy for the defense to push back. They are the battering rams who do the grueling work to open up the field. Watching for the player who always runs into the thickest part of the defense helps you identify them.
