A three-set match is the standard format for most professional tennis competitions. In this format, the first player to win two sets wins the entire match. It is the common structure for all women’s professional matches and most men’s non-Grand Slam events. This format is shorter and more fast-paced than the longer five-set version. It requires players to start strong because there is less time to recover from a slow beginning. For example, a player winning the first set and then the second set finishes the match in about ninety minutes. This allows tournaments to schedule many matches on the same court in a single day. It keeps the intensity high for fans and prevents players from reaching total physical exhaustion too early. Three-set matches are perfect for television broadcasts due to their more predictable time frames. It remains the most common way to experience a professional tennis contest.
