Throw Down Meaning in Softball

A throw down is a fast toss from the catcher to a base. This usually happens when a runner attempts to steal a base during a pitch. The catcher must catch the ball and release a throw in one motion. Accuracy is just as important as speed to beat the sprinting baserunner. A catcher snaps a throw down to second base to catch a stealer. The shortstop catches the ball and applies a tag for a crucial out. This play requires the catcher to have a very strong and precise arm. Middle infielders must move quickly to the bag to receive the fast throw. Successful throw downs discourage the offensive team from attempting to steal any more bases.
