Time conversion is a mathematical formula used to translate a swim time between different pool lengths. Since a 25-yard pool is shorter than a 25-meter pool, the times recorded in each will naturally be different. Conversion charts help coaches compare an athlete’s performance regardless of the pool size used for the meet. A coach converts a yard time to a meter time to see if a swimmer qualifies for a summer meet. While not 100% perfect, these conversions provide a very close estimate of an athlete’s speed. This ensures that seeding for a competition remains fair for everyone involved.
