The total represents the combined score of an athlete’s best snatch and best clean and jerk. This single number determines the final standing and the winner of a weightlifting competition. If a lifter fails all three attempts in one lift, they cannot record a total. Athletes aim to maximize both individual lifts to achieve the highest possible sum of kilograms. A lifter scores a two hundred kilogram total by lifting eighty snatch and one hundred twenty jerk. This number serves as the primary measure of a weightlifter’s overall strength and skill. Most major championships only award medals based on this final combined result from both lifts.
