Traction Meaning in Surfing

Traction refers to the grip between the feet of the surfer and the board. This is achieved using either sticky wax or specialized foam traction pads. High traction prevents the feet from slipping during fast and powerful maneuvers. Surfers prioritize traction on the tail where most of the steering power occurs. Some riders also use front foot traction pads for extra security in big waves. A surfer applies a new layer of wax to improve the traction of the deck. Modern traction pads feature textured patterns like diamonds to enhance the grip. One athlete feels the solid traction of their tail pad during a vertical turn. Maintaining good traction is critical for staying on the board in challenging surf.
