Trailing Runner Meaning in Softball

A trailing runner is the baserunner who is behind the lead runner on paths. For example a runner on first is trailing a runner on second base. The trailing runner must watch the player in front to avoid any collisions. Two runners cannot occupy the same base at the same time during play. A batter hits a double while runners are already on the first base. The trailing runner follows the lead runner around the bags to score runs. If the lead runner stops the trailing runner must also stop immediately. This coordination is key to preventing easy outs on the base path areas. Coaches teach runners to maintain a safe distance while moving between the bases.
