Transfer Meaning in Softball

A transfer is the act of moving the ball from glove to hand. This must be a clean and deliberate motion to count as a catch. Umpires look for a successful transfer when deciding if a fielder had control. If the ball drops during the transfer the umpire may call no out. A center fielder catches a fly and moves the ball to the hand. The player then throws the ball to the infield to stop runners. This movement must happen quickly to prevent the offense from gaining extra bases. Practice drills focus on making this transition as smooth and fast as possible. A fumbled transfer can turn a certain out into a safe base hit.
