A tri-oval is a race track shaped like a triangle with rounded corners. This design features a curved front straightaway instead of a straight line. The extra curve provides fans with a better view of the finish. These tracks allow for very high speeds on the long curved sections. One track uses this shape to create three distinct turning areas for drivers. This layout often leads to very close finishes at the checkered flag. Most of the largest tracks in the sport use this specific geometry. Navigating the tri-oval requires precise steering to maintain a perfectly smooth line. It remains the most common layout for modern professional stock car racing.
