Triple Meaning in Baseball

Definition: A triple is a hit where the batter reaches third base safely without the help of a fielding error. It is often called “the most exciting hit in baseball” because it usually requires the batter to sprint around the bases at full speed.

Triples are much rarer than singles or doubles because they require the ball to be hit into a far corner of the outfield or for the ball to take a lucky bounce away from the fielders. To get a triple, a player has to be incredibly fast and the ball usually has to travel a long distance, giving the runner enough time to pass both first and second base before the ball is thrown back to the infield.

Example: The batter crushed a ball into the deep right-field corner and didn’t stop running until he slid safely into third base for a triple.
