Truck and Trailer is a penalty for obstruction that occurs during a maul. It happens when the ball carrier accidentally or intentionally detaches from the front of the maul but stays bound to a teammate who is in front of them. The teammate effectively acts as a ‘truck’ (a shield), while the carrier is the ‘trailer.’ Since the player in front is blocking the defenders from reaching the ball carrier, it is illegal. The referee will award a penalty to the defending team. For example, if a forward pack is driving toward the line and the player with the ball slips too far back without being bound to an opponent, the ‘truck and trailer’ call is made. It requires the attacking team to stay tightly bound to the opposition to keep the drive legal. This rule ensures that the defense always has a fair path to contest the ball carrier. Beginners should look for a break in the tight formation of the driving forwards to spot this error.
