Tsuru Ashi Dachi is a specialized karate position that translates to the crane stance or the one legged stance. The practitioner stands on one slightly bent leg while the other foot is tucked behind the standing knee. This stance mimics the balance of a bird and is used to avoid low attacks or to prepare a kick. It requires a very strong core and excellent focus to maintain stability while standing on a single point. This position is found in several advanced forms to test the balance and coordination of the martial artist. An athlete balances on one leg to avoid a sweeping kick aimed at their ankles during a drill. Keeping the standing knee slightly bent helps to absorb shocks and maintain a low center of gravity. Mastery of this stance allows a person to deliver a surprise kick from a defensive posture.
