Twist Meaning in Gymnastics

A twist in gymnastics is a rotation around the body vertical axis. The gymnast spins while flipping or jumping. Shoulders and hips turn in the same direction. Arms guide the turning motion in air. Strong core muscles control spin speed. The body may remain straight or tucked. The twist can occur forward or backward. The gymnast spots the floor before landing. Legs extend to prepare for touchdown. Feet land together under control. Balanced landing prevents extra steps. Judges look for clean, complete rotation. For example, a gymnast adds one twist during a backward flip. That added spin increases difficulty and control demands. Tight arm position speeds rotation. Coaches teach shoulder alignment for clean turning.
