Uchi Uke refers to the inside block moving from the center toward the outside. A student starts the arm near the opposite hip and sweeps it outward. This motion pushes an incoming attack away from the side of the body. The forearm acts as a sturdy shield to protect the ribs and chest. A practitioner uses this block to redirect a strike while stepping into range. Rotating the wrist at the end of the sweep increases the deflection speed. This block allows for a very quick transition into a reverse punch strike. The elbow should stay relatively low to keep the shoulder joint safe and stable. Students learn this move to handle attacks coming from the front or side.
