To undercut a ball means hitting it with too little angle during a cut shot. This causes the object ball to miss the pocket on the near side. It is the opposite of overcutting, where you hit the ball too thin. Undercutting usually happens because a player is afraid of missing the ball entirely. It results in the ball hitting the rail before it can reach the hole. Beginners often undercut when they do not visualize the ghost ball target correctly.
