An unearned run is a score that occurs because of a defensive mistake. This run would not have scored if the defense had played without any errors. Officials distinguish these from earned runs to better evaluate the true skill of pitchers. Errors, passed balls, and catcher interference can all lead to an unearned run status. A runner scores from third base after the shortstop drops a routine ground ball. The run is unearned because the third out should have happened on that play. Teams track these runs to identify where the defense needs to improve their performance. Pitchers appreciate this statistic because it shows their performance regardless of teammate errors. Minimizing unearned runs is a primary goal for every defensive unit on the field.
