An unforced error happens when a player misses a shot they should normally make. The mistake occurs without strong pressure from the opponent. The ball may go into the net or land out. Often, the player had enough time and balance. These errors usually result from poor focus or bad judgment. Players try to limit unforced errors to stay competitive. Too many can quickly shift momentum. For example, during a steady rally, a player attempts a routine forehand. They hit it long without being rushed. The point ends immediately. Unforced errors show lapses in consistency rather than skill.
