Unrack Meaning in Weightlifting

To unrack means to lift a loaded barbell off the support hooks of a squat rack or a stand. This initial movement requires the athlete to create a stable shelf with their body to support the heavy weight. Proper positioning of the feet and the back is necessary to ensure the bar is balanced before stepping back. This is the first step of a back squat or a front squat or an overhead press movement. A lifter takes a deep breath and tightens their core before they unrack two hundred kilograms for a set. Ensuring a solid and controlled start prevents the athlete from losing their balance during the actual lifting repetitions. This simple action sets the foundation for the safety and the success of the entire heavy training set.
