Ushiro Empi Uchi Meaning in Karate

Ushiro Empi Uchi is a specialized karate strike known as the backward elbow strike for rear defense. The practitioner drives the point of the elbow straight back to hit an opponent standing behind them. This technique is essential for situations where an attacker grabs the defender from the rear or the side. It targets the solar plexus or the ribs of the person behind to force them to let go. The strike travels in a direct line and relies on a sharp shift of the body weight. An athlete strikes backward with the elbow to escape a bear hug during a self defense class. Looking over the shoulder before striking ensures that the elbow hits the intended target with precision. A short and explosive movement provides the most impact when space behind the body is limited.
