Ushiro Mawashi Geri Meaning in Karate

Ushiro Mawashi Geri is an advanced karate strike known as the spinning back hook kick or wheel. The practitioner performs a full 360 degree turn and hooks the heel into the target during rotation. This technique generates massive centrifugal force which makes it a very dangerous and effective finishing move. It is often used to surprise an opponent who is expecting a standard straight back kick. The eyes must find the target quickly after the turn to ensure the heel lands accurately. A student performs a spinning hook kick during a high level demonstration of martial arts skill. Maintaining a tight rotation prevents the body from swinging too wide and losing its structural balance. Strong leg muscles are necessary to stop the momentum of the spin after the kick.
