A vault handspring is a basic move where the gymnast flips forward. The gymnast runs down the runway and jumps onto the springboard. The athlete places both hands on the vault table and pushes off. While in the air, the body rotates forward in a straight line. The gymnast completes a half flip and lands on their feet. The body must stay straight without any tucking or piking of legs. This move is the foundation for all other forward vaulting skills. A gymnast performs a vault handspring in early competitive levels of gymnastics. The athlete must maintain a very fast run to gain enough power. Keeping the arms straight during the hand placement ensures a high flight. The gymnast lands with the chest up and the arms held wide. Judges look for a straight body and a lack of leg bending. This vault requires the gymnast to keep the toes pointed the whole time. Strong shoulder muscles help the athlete push away from the table quickly. The landing must be firm and steady on the foam landing mat.
