The vault layout refers to a flip performed with the body completely straight. The gymnast does not bend the knees or the hips during the aerial phase. This position is much harder than a tuck because a long body rotates slowly. The gymnast must run at top speed to gain the power for this vault. One competitor performed a perfect layout during the final round of a cup event. Maintaining a hollow body shape prevents the back from arching during the flight. A hollow shape means the stomach is tight and the chest is slightly rounded. Judges look for a straight line from the toes to the head in air. The gymnast must time the landing perfectly to avoid falling forward or backward. A strong push off the table provides the elevation needed for the slow rotation. This skill demonstrates great core strength and control over the entire muscular system. Successful athletes keep their arms tight against their ears or sides during the flight. The layout serves as the foundation for adding twists in more advanced vaults.
