A waist-high tackle is a defensive move where the tackler aims for the midsection or hips of the ball carrier. It is considered one of the most effective and safe ways to bring down an opponent. By targeting the waist, the defender can wrap their arms securely and use their shoulder to stop the runner’s momentum without risking illegal head contact. This technique also makes it easier to slide down to the legs to complete the tackle. For example, a center might use a waist-high tackle to ‘stop the man’ and prevent him from gaining extra meters after contact. Unlike a ‘smother tackle’ (which aims higher to stop an offload), the waist-high tackle focuses purely on bringing the player to the ground. It is the gold standard for coaching because it maximizes the chances of a legal, dominant hit. Beginners are taught to ‘hit with the shoulder, wrap with the arms’ at the waist to ensure player safety and defensive solidness.
