Wall contact refers to the moment a swimmer touches the pool end to finish a lap or a race. Rules require a specific type of contact—such as two hands for breaststroke or any part of the body for freestyle—to make the turn or finish legal. If a swimmer misses the wall or fails to make proper contact, they face immediate disqualification. A swimmer ensures firm wall contact with their palm to trigger the electronic timing sensor. Proper contact is the bridge between two lengths of the pool, allowing for a powerful push-off. Mastering the timing of this touch prevents the swimmer from ‘shorting’ the wall and losing momentum.
