A warm-up lap is another name for the formation lap. Drivers leave the grid and complete one lap. They heat the tires and brakes during this time. Proper temperature improves grip at the start. For example, drivers weave slightly to warm the tires. Heavy braking also builds brake temperature. After the lap, cars return to grid positions. The warm-up lap prepares both car and driver. A good preparation supports a strong launch.
