Wet Start Meaning in Swimming

A wet start occurs when a swimmer begins a race while already in the water, rather than diving from a block. This is the standard start for all backstroke races and is sometimes used in lower-level meets for safety reasons. The swimmer holds onto the starting grips or the pool edge and pushes off the wall with their feet at the signal. An athlete prepares for a wet start by tucking their knees and gripping the backstroke bars. While it lacks the initial speed of a dive, a powerful push and underwater kick can still generate significant momentum. Mastering the ‘bridge’ or arch off the wall is key to a successful wet start.
