A wheelie is a classic bicycle trick where the rider balances on the rear wheel while pedaling forward. To perform it, you pull up on the handlebars while simultaneously pushing down hard on the pedals to lift the front. Once the front wheel is in the air, you use the rear brake and your body weight to maintain the balance point. It is not just for showing off; it is also a useful skill for clearing obstacles on a mountain bike trail. For example, a rider will wheelie over a fallen log to keep their front chainring from getting stuck or damaged. I find that learning to wheelie is a great way to improve your overall bike control and your confidence with the brakes. It takes a lot of practice to find the sweet spot where you don”t fall backward or let the front drop. Start on a soft grass surface to stay safe while you are learning the basic movements. It is a timeless skill that brings a sense of playfulness to every ride.
