A wide grip describes a hand placement on the barbell that is significantly outside the shoulders. Lifters use this specific hand width almost exclusively for the snatch and its related training exercises. This grip shortens the distance the bar must travel to reach the overhead locked position. The athlete places their hands near the collars of the bar to create a stable overhead base. A lifter marks their hand position on the metal bar using the etched lines for consistency. Finding the correct width depends on the arm length and shoulder flexibility of the individual athlete. Using this wide stance allows for a faster and more efficient transition under the heavy weight.
