Wing position refers to the players stationed in the far corners of court. These two players stay near the sidelines and the six meter goal line. Their main role is to provide width and finish fast break scoring chances. Wingers must be the fastest players on the team to lead transition play. Defensively they guard the opposing wings and help the interior defenders when needed. A player in the wing position sprints down the sideline to receive a pass. This role requires the ability to shoot accurately from very tight and difficult angles. Coaches look for agile players with high endurance to fill these specialized court roles. The wing position is vital for stretching the defense and creating space inside. Success in this role often results in spectacular diving goals for the team.
