Winning time is the official duration recorded by the first-place finisher in a swimming race. This time is used to rank the heat winner against other athletes in the event and to determine if a record has been broken. In timed finals, the winning time from the fastest heat is usually the winner of the entire event. A swimmer watches the scoreboard to see a winning time of fifty-two seconds in the hundred-meter freestyle. This result is the benchmark that every other competitor in the pool is trying to beat. The winning time is officially certified by the referee and recorded in the meet’s permanent results history.
