A wipeout is a fall from the surfboard during a riding session. This happens when the rider loses balance or the wave becomes too powerful. The surfer is usually tumbled underwater by the force of the breaking wave. Most wipeouts are harmless but some can be very intense in large surf. Staying relaxed during a wipeout helps the athlete conserve oxygen and energy. Every surfer experiences many wipeouts while learning and practicing new moves in sea. A surfer falls during a steep takeoff and tumbles into the white foam. The leash keeps the board from floating away after a heavy ocean fall. One athlete resurfaces and grabs their board after a long underwater tumble. Learning to fall safely is a part of becoming a proficient surfer.
