The Wolfpack Defence is a specific high-pressure defensive system made famous by the Saracens club in England. It is characterized by a relentless, aggressive line-speed where defenders ‘hunt’ in small groups, much like a pack of wolves. The goal is to suffocate the attacking team, giving them zero time to think or pass, and forcing them into making errors or hurried kicks. This system requires incredible fitness and perfect synchronization between players. For example, when a team tries to move the ball wide, the ‘Wolfpack’ defenders will sprint forward in a coordinated line to tackle the attackers behind the gain line. This defensive style is as much about psychological intimidation as it is about physical tackling. It has influenced many international teams to adopt a more ‘blitz’ style of defending. Watching a Wolfpack-style defense is like watching a wall of players constantly closing in on the ball.
