A working set refers to the primary part of a workout performed at the target intensity. These sets follow the warm up and contain the most challenging weights for the daily training session. This is where the actual physical adaptation and strength gains happen for the weightlifting athlete. Most programs prescribe a specific number of sets and repetitions to be finished with high focus. An athlete completes four working sets of three repetitions with ninety percent of their maximum weight. These sets require the most mental energy and physical effort during the time in the gym. Coaches monitor the quality of these sets to decide when to increase the training weight.
