The Yellow Jersey is worn by the rider with the lowest total time in the Tour de France. Officials add up each rider’s time after every stage. The rider with the fastest overall time becomes the race leader and wears the yellow jersey in the next stage.
It shows who leads the entire race, not just who won a single day. Riders must perform well in flat stages, mountain climbs, and time trials to keep it. Strong teamwork and smart racing help a rider protect the lead over three weeks.
Example: After finishing Stage 5 with the fastest total time overall, the rider wore the Yellow Jersey in Stage 6 as the race leader.
