Yori Ashi is a karate footwork technique known as the dragging or gliding step for sudden movements. The practitioner slides both feet simultaneously across the floor without changing the relationship between the front and back. This movement resembles a quick hop or a glide that keeps the body in the same stance. It is used to move forward or backward very fast to either attack or avoid a strike. The feet stay in constant contact with the surface to provide maximum stability and better ground traction. A student glides forward to land a fast jab before the opponent can react in class. Pushing off the back foot provides the explosive energy needed for a truly effective glide. This technique is perfect for covering a short distance in the blink of an eye.
