Yuko Meaning in Karate

Yuko is a scoring term in karate that represents the value of one point in competition. It is the lowest score awarded for an effective technique that lands on a valid target. Referees give this point for well timed punches to the body or the head of the opponent. The technique must show good form and be performed with a strong and alert mental state. While it is only one point many of these scores can lead to a victory. An athlete lands a fast jab to the chest and receives a one point award. Developing speed is the primary way to land these quick scoring strikes during a busy match. Accumulating several points puts constant pressure on the opponent to take more risks to catch up.
