Zone Defense Meaning in Handball

Zone defense is a formation where the team protects the area near goal. Players stand in specific patterns like the six zero or five one. Every defender guards a section of the six meter line to block shots. This system relies on teamwork rather than individual one on one defensive skill. The goal is to force the offense to take difficult long range shots. A team sets up a zone defense to block a powerful backcourt. This structure allows the defense to remain compact and protect the scoring zone. Players must stay alert and react to the ball’s movement as a unit. Coaches choose different zone patterns based on the strengths of the opposing team. Proper zone defense is the foundation of a successful and disciplined handball team.
