Spikes are specialized shoes that athletes wear to improve their performance on the track or field. These shoes feature small metal or ceramic pins, also called spikes, screwed into the bottom of the sole. In the world of athletics, these pins provide essential traction by digging into the track surface. This grip prevents slipping and allows the runner to transfer all their energy into forward motion.

How Athletes Use Them

Athletes choose different types of spikes based on their specific event. Sprinters use shoes with stiff soles and pins located only at the front to keep them on their toes. Meanwhile, long-distance runners wear spikes with more heel cushioning to protect their feet over many laps.

Field athletes, such as high jumpers or javelin throwers, often have spikes in the heel as well to provide stability during their approach and plant. Because these shoes have a very tight fit, they function almost like a second skin.

Why Spikes Matter

Spikes matter because they significantly increase a runner’s speed and safety. Without them, a sprinter might lose valuable milliseconds due to lack of grip during the explosive start. Therefore, these shoes are a requirement for competitive racing on synthetic tracks.

For example, a 100-meter runner relies on the pins to “bite” the track, which helps them accelerate rapidly from the starting blocks. In addition to speed, spikes help runners navigate sharp turns on the oval track without losing balance.
