A Roll Shot (also known as a Punto or Pointing Shot) is the most common move in bocce. It is a gentle, controlled throw where the ball stays on the ground for most of its journey.
How It Works
- The Delivery: You release the ball low to the ground.
- The Motion: The ball rolls smoothly along the court surface like a bowling ball.
- The Goal: You try to get your ball to stop as close to the pallino (the small target ball) as possible.
Why Players Use It
- Accuracy: Since the ball stays on the ground, it is easier to control its direction and speed.
- Blocking: You can roll a ball to a specific spot to create a “wall” that makes it harder for your opponent to reach the target.
- Consistency: This is the safest way to score points without risking a wild throw.
How to Master It
To perform a great roll shot, you must follow through with your arm toward the target. You focus on the “weight” or strength of your toss so the ball doesn’t roll too far past the target or stop too short.
