A live ball is when the ball is officially in play, and players can run, pass, or kick it to advance and score. It becomes live once the ball is legally snapped to start a play or kicked on a kickoff, and stays live until the play ends or the referees stop it.
Example: On the first down, once the center snaps the ball to the quarterback, the ball is live, and both teams can try to move it.
