In Aikido, Nage means “the thrower” or “the defender.” It describes the person who receives the attack, redirects the energy, and applies the technique.
Depending on the school or style of Aikido, people also call this person Tori or Shite.
Here is how Nage works in practice:
1. The Role of Nage
During practice, your partner attacks you. As Nage, you do not meet this attack with force. Instead, you step offline, blend with the attacker’s movement, and neutralize the threat using a throw, a joint lock, or a pin.
2. Leadership and Care
Nage acts as the leader of the movement. You guide the attacker’s energy safely. Because Aikido focuses on harmony rather than destruction, Nage bears the responsibility to protect the attacker from severe injury during the throw.
3. The Other Half: Uke
You cannot have Nage without Uke. Uke is the person who initiates the attack and receives the technique. Aikido training relies on Nage and Uke constantly switching roles so both partners learn how to give energy and how to guide it.
The Meaning of the Word: The word Nage comes from the Japanese verb nageru, which means “to throw.” Even when Nage applies a pinning technique instead of a throw, they are still referred to as the Nage.
