The throwing line (also called the foul line) is a mark on the court that limits where you can stand when you toss the ball. It keeps the game fair by ensuring every player throws from the same distance.
The Rules of the Line
- Stay Behind the Line: You must keep both feet behind this line until you release the ball.
- The Foul Rule: If your foot touches or crosses the line before you let go of the ball, you commit a “foul.”
- The Penalty: If you step over the line, the referee or the opposing team usually removes your ball from the court for that turn. You get zero points for that specific throw.
Different Lines for Different Throws
In professional bocce, the court actually has multiple lines:
- Pointing Line: You stand behind this line for “pointing” shots (slow rolls meant to get close to the target).
- Hitting Line: You may be allowed to move further up the court to this line for “hitting” or “spocking” shots (fast throws meant to knock away an opponent’s ball).
Why It Matters
The throwing line prevents players from “leaning in” too far to gain an advantage. It forces you to rely on your aim and strength rather than getting a head start down the court.
